In my first practice space of the Lifehouse (downtown Nanaimo in the Old City Quarter) I had a similar image painted as a large mural on the wall. I encourage you to print the image off and place it on your own wall, fridge or somewhere you can see it throughout the day.
It’s as simple as this: Every thought, word and action will lead you either upstream or downstream. Upstream goes against the current/flow, is met with resistance and creates tension within and around. When we are going upstream we are disconnected from the larger rhythms and truths both within and all around which often creates more fear and a greater energy drain. Going with the flow, going downstream, creates ease which is health (the opposite of dis-ease). When we are going with the flow we are tapped in, turned on and fully connected. Expressing ourselves authentically. Are you living in fear or are you living in love? This is a choice and is driven by every thot, word and action you make on a moment to moment basis. This is life. Life is a process. Listen and fine tune your flow. Cheering you on to Trust Your Flow!

Many native cultures speak of how we each have two birthdays: The first birthday is the day we are born. The second happens later in life, and not everyone chooses this one. It is the day when the soul births itself, a more authentic self. This second birth is known in humans as transformation -- in animals, known as metamorphosis. The transformational process has been written about for eons and is referred to in many religions. Often there is a dark night, a period where what currently is no longer works. Soon through this dark night, what is current becomes the past. That past being the eggshell which harboured your rebirth. Much like the darkness a young chick experiences inside its egg, through this dark void the chick grows and begins its desire to emerge itself anew. Ever so faintly the chick slowly starts to peck on the egg from the inside out. This pecking process build strength to the muscles of the chick… As the pecking continues, its muscles get stronger, and stronger, until it is finally strong enough. The chick’s strengthened muscles allow it to break through the shell -- a crack of light emerges. The new world appears and a new chick emerges. Thankfully through the pecking process the bird was able to fully develop its neck muscles. It was the process of pecking at the egg that enabled the bird to build his muscles so it could hold its head upright. Now just think if that egg was cracked from the outside, how life would have emerged prematurely and the poor chick wouldn’t have been able to hold its head upright. Unable to feed itself or move properly. Perhaps it would go its whole life having never developed the strength it needed. In relation to ourselves a corollary sentiment emerges: Trust the process. You are emerging you. Pecking at it, pecking at it, from the inside out. If you fall down, if you relapse, know that this only making you stronger. It is through the process that you are developing the muscles to hold yourself upright. B.J. Palmer, who was D.D. Palmer’s son (The Founder of Chiropractic) is credited as being the Developer of Chiropractic. He was able to grow his father’s fledgling profession to in the 1930’s in it’s hay day’s having approximately 460 students at Palmer College of Chiropractic. There were also numerous other chiropractic colleges around the US sprouting up which made chiropractic one of the fastest growing professions around. B.J. was incredibly prolific and eccentric. On top of being the president of Palmer College, he operated one of the first Radio Stations called WOC (Wonders of Chiropractic) at which he gave future president Ronald Reagan his first broadcasting job, was one the first to use x-rays for diagnostic purposes, travelled extensively around the world, and wrote 33 volumes of Green Books, which would later become tenets for Principled Chiropractors around the world. One his most appreciated books was titled “The Bigness of The Fellow Within” which would later become the inspiration of Dr. Norm’s My Inner Guru program. Evolution of Chiropractic Chiropractic was born in the late 1800’s and has grown now to be the 3rd most used primary access health care fields in the world. In North America there are more than 82,250 chiropractors and there are now chiropractors and colleges around the world. Today there are more than 300 different chiropractic techniques with many different applications and styles. Network Spinal Analysis (NSA) was created in 1982 by Dr. Donald Epstein and is a tonal technique focusing on the nervous system and energy system of our bodies. Network is being research by many universities around the world in regards to its impact on clients quality of life and is currently being taught in many of the Chiropractic Colleges. Network is an exciting and expanding field of holistic health aligned with the core principles of early Chiropractic as taught by D.D. and B.J. Palmer. Reference: 1. (2018). Chiro.org. Ancient writings in these cultures mention manipulation of the spine and maneuvering of the lower extremities to ease low back pain. Even Hippocrates, who lived from 460 to 357 B.C. published texts detailing the importance of the spine. “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.” -Hippocrates Chiropractic’s Founder was Daniel David Palmer (known as D.D.) a Canadian who was born in Port Perry, Ontario. He studied spiritualism in the late 1860’s and in 1888 opened a practice as a magnetic healer in Davenport, Iowa. He took out ads and his business grew by word of mouth. His earliest known ad dates to 1887. In the ad he writes, “Dis-ease is a condition of not-ease, lack of ease.” This became one of the fundamental defining aspects of the chiropractic paradigm. “Life is the expression of tone. In that sentence is the basic principle of Chiropractic.” - Dr. D.D. Palmer According to him the interference in the nerves especially at the spinal joints cause restrictions in function. This leads the nervous system to function abnormally due to too much activity or decreased activity causing dis-ease. “This change in biomechanical structure leading to neural dysfunction was termed subluxation by Palmer and his early students. The chiropractic adjustment normalizes and eases the structure and the nervous system bringing the body back into ease which is health. D.D. Palmer used the term “intelligence” to refer to one’s spirit. Thirty years later, Innate Intelligence became central to his philosophy. D.D. Palmer’s first adjustment was on his janitor “Harvey Lillard” in the building where he operated. Harvey reported in the January 1897 issue of The Chiropractic that: “I was deaf 17 years and I expected to always remain so, for I had doctored a great deal without any benefit. I had long ago made up my mind to not take any more ear treatments, for it did me no good. Last January Dr. Palmer told me that my deafness came from an injury in my spine. This was new to me; but it is a fact that my back was injured at the time I went deaf. Dr. Palmer treated me on the spine; in two treatments I could hear quite well. That was eight months ago. My hearing remains good.” Reference: 1. D.D. Palmer's life and legacy. (2018). TIC. Retrieved 3 April 2018, from https://www.institutechiro.com/gens/first-generation-chiropractors/dd-palmer/ 2. "sub" = less than, "lux" = light or life, and "ation" is a state of being. What is a Subluxation? A Subluxation is an area of interference or blockage in the nerve system. Much like the static that happens with a cellular phone when there is interference in the phone signal, interference in the nerves creates static in the nerve messages. Sometimes the messages are interrupted, sometimes they are completely cut off, but most often the interference results in an increase in nerve activity which can result in pain, dis-ease and dis-function. Chronic pain among adults has been measured at up to 41% of the population in both developed and developing countries. If we talk about Canada, in a 2016 survey, 15% of post-secondary students in Ontario said they'd been treated for depression or diagnosed with it in the previous year. For anxiety, the figure was 18%. (1) In the United States chronic pain is estimated to affect more than 100 million adults, producing over $600 billion dollars of direct and indirect costs each year. Low back and neck pain, specifically, account for the greatest cause of disability in both men and women in most countries worldwide. (2) What does the Nervous System do? Your nervous system is the master system of your whole body. It runs and regulates movement, bodily function and is also how you feel pain and symptoms. When you are subluxated this can impair the function of the associated muscles, bones and even tissues and organs. When you are living with subluxations you are expressing less than your full life potential. Living with subluxations decreases your ability to function and grow optimally leading to a life less than you were intended to live. Causes of Subluxations? Subluxations are caused by Stress! When life is more than you can handle, whether it be physical, mental, emotional or chemical experiences this results as stress and is stored in your body which results in subluxation. The American Medical Association recognizes that 80% of all disease is due to stress. Know that with each adjustment you are addressing the primary cause of disease. Chiropractors adjust subluxations helping the body integrate the stored stress, teaching your body to adapt and thrive, supporting your Master Control System to function at its optimal potential, building health from the inside out. B.J. Palmer, who is considered as the “developer” of chiropractic, coined the term “above-down-inside-out” to refer to the notion that the innate intelligence of the body controls healing from inside out and chiropractic intervention assists the body to optimize and achieve self-healing.(2)
